Mark
This post is fantastic and I am glad I have read it now as my son is due to have his 1st op in about 10weeks or so and just like many other parents on here a worried one about how it will effect him when hes older. Tell me how did u cope as u was growing up? Its fantastic that ur mother can bring the subject up with u after so long and hope that Oliver and Myself can be close enough as mother and son to be able to talk openly about his condition as he gets older.

Thanks for a great post!

Rach

Hi RachelG

There are men with very serious conditions who do have children, they just need help rather than father in the 'normal' way. As long as there are testes and active sperm it is possible.

Sitting to pee is awkward when at school, the other kids will definitely notice a difference and that may start the ball rolling. I would make sure that say after sport he is not pushed into general showers with the other boys since that might be a place for bullying.

John

Hi y`all, as you will notice ( besides the fact that I`m from Texas) I`m the new guy here so please bare with me as I`m having a really hard time descussing this so if I put some truthfull humor in my story I`m just trying to relax brcause this isn`t a humor type subject. I`ve been unable to find much info on my questions about what I beleave is a Coronal Hypospadias with a Hooded forskin because I urinate out a hole at the junction of my Gland and Shaft that I would say you could probably put a school pencil in. I`ve never tried that but I did watch my uroligest put a camra system in my penis which I can asure you was BIGGER than a school pencil and had my undevided attention. They told me they admenistered a numbing agent for my comfort so I thanked them. About 2 inches into the prosedure I informed them that they had wasted their time with the money they spent on the numbing stuff. This was about 12 years ago and that was the first time I ever heard the word HYPOSPADIAS. My doctor asked me if it ever caused me any problems. I told him that I didn`t know of any and that was the end of the conversation about my "PEE HOLE" but he did do (2) Prostrate surgeries 11 months apart, no Cancer Thank God, just a restriction. I had to have the second one because of scar tissue from the first one.
I tell people that want to ask me something to use short words to the point, that way we both know what we`re talking about. So I`ll try to quite being jumpy and get to it as fast as I can. I`m 65 years old, blood father of 2 boys and 1 girl, stepfather to 2 girls and 1 boy and they actually let me know they really like me being their dad, unlike the first (3) but I guess that`s true with a lot of families. I say boys and girls cause they`ll always be my kids. But actually their all grown with children of their own, all healthy to my knowledge, but I`ll be asking their parents.

About 18 months ago my streem began to be really hard to control. I`m sure a lot of y`all understand the little things that you laugh off as something else that might be the cause for peeing all over the toilet and floor or your shoes and cloths, the dampness from lekage I control with a pad in my shorts which is emberacing but what the heck that`s an easy fix. But I can asure y`all that when your crowded in a long Public urinil at say a Rodeo or a Nascar race and your stream not only gets on you but one or both of the guys beside you it creats a small problem. Being very small when flacid I have been unable to find a way to control my stream, and beleave me I`ve tried due to the crouded Bathroom feasco. So out in public and at home I try to sit down as apposed to making a mess that I feel obliged to clean up for the next person. I quickly learned that there are a lot of pubilc facilities you DO NOT sit in, which creates it`s on problem because of people who don`t care about the next person (that might not be appropreat in this Forum but it`s how I feel). Also one of my observent grandson`s asked me why I always used the stall when we were at a game anyplace and not the "Stand Up Place". I didn`t have a clue how to answer that one so I asked him if he was ready for a Hotdog and a Coke, it worked. I have sence stayed out of them when in the company of my grandsons, not to mention the reason I mentioned before. My wife doesn`t say anything about all the paper I use in the bathroom, I figure that is because I quite saying anything about her excessive use (to me anyway) for a "Pat Down" after urinating. But she did start saying something about the damp rug and the smell it left. At this point I made an appointment with my VA uroligest. They told me they would have to send me to South Texas to someone with more experiance in this perticurler field (that was my first clue I needed more info) to check me out.

So (alright, he`s finally getting to the point) my questions are:
Am I to old for the repair, if not about how long will I be doing Anything for NOTHING not even AIR to touch the area in question. Bear in mind that basicly the biggest problem I have with my condition isn`t Phisical (although there is a deffinit phisical problem) it`s Mental and it really bothers me because I spend a lot of time in public places and will the repair if it works, because I understand this is a factor allow me some peace of mind. I`ve read some people with this condition say sitting down to pee isn`t that big a deal. Well I`m happy for them and hopefully they will never have to make an excuse to their child or worse grangchild, because to me that was much worse than all the times I`ve had to hide damp clothing or damp spots on my shoes from the spray, dribble, or what ever people wish to call it.
I`m so glad I found out there is a website to read and share expreiances because everything that I`ve experianced in the last 18 months and before I have read about someone having the same problem sometime in their life. In the last few days I`ve learned how very lucky I really am because not only did I never experiance any of the phisical and mental pain growing up I`ve spent ALL of my life untill 18 months ago or so not even knowing I had a birth defect.
Thanks for your time. Torino

Dear Rachel, it must be terribly scary as a mother - I'm only starting to realise now just what my mother must have gone through. I had two hyposadias operations as a baby (the second as a toddler). I'm now a father of two (beautiful) teenage daughters, and I know how I worry about them - all the time - especially around anything medical (my youngest is asthmatic). Anyway, if it's any reassurance, I came through both operations without any particular difficulties and I imagine that things probably run more smoothly now in hospitals than they did in the 1960s. In particular I think hospitals are better at making sure that mum (and dad) are on hand rather than separated from baby following the operation. I hope it all goes well for you and your son, I'm sure it will.

Its not the amount of operations he will have to have that is bothering me its the fact that Im not being told anything about the 'condition' or what anything will entail, I hadnt even heard of it until I had my youngest. I have learnt more about HS on here than any doctor or consultant or specialist has told me in the past 8 months.

Hi hankypants... Surgions are now doing them alot younger as they find the healing process is alot quicker... my child is just 8 months old and we go back to the hospital in june to be told when his 1st operation is of which I am in mad panic about as I havent been told nothing about it apart from its gonna b cut snipped tucked sewn ect. The best thing for you to do is do a search on yell.com and type in privete hospitals in the uk and it should give u a list of places which then if u ring them and ask if they have a surgeon that can deal with HS they should give info from there. It is ur right as a parent to refuse the surgeon that was dealing with ur childs case and reuest another 1... try ringing wythenshaw hospital or Manchester childrens hospital as apparently that it where the specialist are in the north west. My son is under Dr kayikaki ( I think thats how you spell it) and he is very nice and probably the only specialist that has given me any clue as 2 what they needed to do. He is based at Wythenshaw hospital in manchester. Go 2 ur doctor and ask them if he would recommend u 2 Wythenshaw hospital or manchester childrens hospital and he should. Hope you find a good surgeon soon.

Hello
just read your post and wanted to reply I'm 25 so older than you but I do think some medical professionals can lack in the way they explain things to younger mums for that reason. Don't let that put you of asking questions though. I ask lots however silly them may seem and my son has now been seen by a second surgeon because I needed to feel reassured his surgeon knew what he was doing!
I would recommend you join the forum as this has given me lots of questions to ask!. My son will not be having his first surgery until he is 2 in november but I feel quite confident in his surgeon's ability to do the surgery.
This probably will not help much but asking lots of questions has made me feel better about his future surgery.
take care
jayjays mummy
