After the OP, living with it...
Dec 18th, 2009, 5:33pm

My wife handed me an article in a national newspaper about hypo. So I followed the link to this website.
Have scanned a couple of missives, I thought I would share my story, so, both those with hypo and worried parents of young children too, will see how confident they can feel about the options and the through life consequnces.
I am 60 years old now.  Both my brother [a year younger] and I were both born with hypo.
At and early age we both underwent operations at an Oxford hospital, the surgeon was Mr Peet I believe.
At the age of 15 I went back for minor repairs to leaks in the skin graft carrying the outflow under the penis.
The only inconvenience has been controlling the spread and direction, but with experience [and sitting when possible] it hasn't been an issue that has greatly affected my life.
I also have a grown up son, who was perfectly formed, and his son[1 of twins 1boy 1girl] is perfect too.
Yes I do not look quite like others...but on the bright side from the underside where the graft ends it looks like I have a smile - I  remember a cartoon book many years ago, on general sale, based on a 'willie' charactor[not dissimmilar..]
I spent nearly 35 years in the armed forces, never once was an issue raised over my individuality.
Recently my mum, now in her 80s, quietly asked how it had affected me, and said how sorry she was it had happened to both of her boys, she felt responsible.  Well, she needn't...  She did the best thing anyone could have, elected us for corrective surgery.
I know each case is very different, but from this author theoutcome has only been good...
Thank you for reading this and good luck.

As a mother of two sons, one with hypo and one without...I am one of the mum's you mention - a worried one.  Have I done the right thing in having corrective surgery, how will it affect my son when he's older and what did I do wrong to make this happen in the first place....

Thank you Mark, for this positive post.  It was perfectly timed!

my son hasn't had his surgeries yet but I have had no doubts that having surgery is right for him.

Your post was lovely and its great that as adults you and your mum could talk  about hypospadia and the decision she had made for you to have surgery. I hope my son will feel the same about the decision I have made for him.

This post is fantastic and I am glad I have read it now as my son is due to have his 1st op in about 10weeks or so and just like many other parents on here a worried one about how it will effect him when hes older. Tell me how did u cope as u was growing up? Its fantastic that ur mother can bring the subject up with u after so long and hope that Oliver and Myself can be close enough as mother and son to be able to talk openly about his condition as he gets older.

Thanks for a great post!
